When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole (#106 in 2020)
Sydney Green has started to notice that her community is changing, and she's not happy about it. Buildings are going up for sale, homes are changing to be more modern, realtors are flashing dollar bills in exchange for precious real estate, and the neighbors Sydney has loved her whole life seem to have vanished. When Sydney begins a walking tour of Brooklyn and meets Theo, they start to realize the much darker side to gentrification...
I got this book and thought, "wow, what a cover!"
I started this book and thought, "this protagonist is perfect."
I continued this book and thought, "there's so much deeper meaning here..."
& then I hit the conclusion and was like, "... hmm."
My compliments: Cole's writing style and use of dialogue.
My critiques: the stretch of a turn that this book took regarding plot and the subsequent ending.
My advice: when the plot starts to get wonky, just know that you have to suspend your disbelief.
Essentially, this book seeks to show that change isn't always good... ⭐️⭐️💫
