The Shining by Stephen King (#85 in 2020)
After a tumultuous past in New England, Jack Torrence takes a job as the wintertime caretaker at the Overlook Hotel in the Colorado mountains. The setting seems idyllic with the beautiful scenery and peaceful environment of the woods, but as the harsh storms of winter arrive, Jack and his family notice a feeling of evil beneath the roof of the Overlook. Is it cabin fever, or is it something more disturbing?
Remember when I read another “haunted house” story? And remember when I was livid that said haunted house story had stolen much of its content from other haunted house stories to come before it? The Shining is another book that said haunted house story has stolen content from, and I’m over here like —> 🙄.
But let’s compliment THIS masterful work of horror! I went in pretty blind because it’s been a loooong time since the one time I watched The Shining with Jack Nicholson, but I had a vague idea of what I thought the story was about. I will say that the book is different than what I remember the movie being about. The book is much more horrorful than psychological, and the atmospheric complexities of the setting kept me up late at night.
Also... if you’ve read the book, Dick Halloran is the best ancillary character of all time.
As always, thanks to @topshelfbookreviews for mapping out our Stephen King book tour and to my buddy @mary_reagans_books for reading this one with me! And now we can move on to our next Stephen King masterpiece!
And now for the #scoopsofbooks @cozytrishreads shoutout- it’s another ice cream masterpiece from Bayside Creamery in Perth Amboy! This was Cristina’s pick, and while I don’t remember the flavor, it definitely has some chocolate in there. (B➡️Swipe for the view)
