The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (#14 in 2020)

@thedream515 and I discussed this book very briefly prior to my reading of it. We didn't get into a single detail about the story (thanks for not sharing any spoilers), but he told me that the first 2/3 of The Nightingale are amazing... but the final 1/3 is what makes it a 5 star read. I feel like that's the best way for me to start this review, because that statement is perfectly accurate.

I read this book as a buddy read with one of my 8th grade students (hey, Sophia), and we both fell in love with it. I thought a good way of reviewing this book would be to do it from two different perspectives: student and teacher.

Sophia's review: The Nightingale was a very life changing book. It definitely wasn't like most of WW2 that I've read, it was the best one I have read. There were a lot of plot twists and the book left you on a cliffhanger that made you just wanna keep reading. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a good book to read. 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ms. Hammy's review: I'm obviously a sucker for a strong, female protagonist, so that sold me immediately. Isabelle totally won me over as an independent and confident young woman, unafraid to stand up for what she felt was right, even in the face of extreme danger. Vianne, while much more reserved than her sister, still demonstrated strength, but hers was of a different kind. The reader in me this book immensely, and the 8th grade teacher in me enjoyed it just as much. While this book might not be for every student, a mature reader would do well with it. There is some content that is both sexual and violent in nature, but this is not at all a plot focus. The scenes in which this content appears are brief and not strongly detailed. 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
