The Knockout Queen by Rufi Thorpe (#63 in 2020)
Thank you to Knopf Publishing for my advanced copy of this new book! Bunny and Michael live next door to one another. Bunny is beautiful and rich, while Michael comes from a broken family and lives with his aunt in the tiny house next door. Bunny and Michael form a special friendship where Michael feels comfortable enough to reveal that he is gay. When Michael's secret is revealed in a vicious string of gossip, Bunny takes matters into her own hands, and she does so in a way that is more physically vicious than the words spread about Michael... HOW am I supposed to give a review on this book without revealing important parts of the story?! I love Michael. I love Bunny. I love their friendship. I love how Rufi Thorpe locks the reader in a GLASS CASE OF EMOTION! Parts of the book are comical, parts are sarcastic, parts are terrifying, parts are heartbreaking... I actually felt like I knew the characters and the empath in me felt how they felt. Please go in blind on this one. Trust me when I say it's a really special book. 4.5 stars
