He's an ordinary, queer high school student who spends his free time writing fan fiction about the superheroes that protect, serve, and cause drama around his city. When Nick happens to meet his favorite hero (and also not-so-secret crush), Shadow Star, he sets out to make himself extraordinary so he can join the likes of the heroes he loves.ā£

The superheroes and their superpowers are all the fantasy this story needs, while the rest of the setting and plot is presented with verisimilitude (think: the setting of Spiderman where the only unrealistic elements are the superheroes in a very realistic setting). Now as for the content... HILARIOUS. I never expected to catch myself laughing out loud, but it was something I just couldn't help. Nick and his friends are witty, sarcastic, and incredibly close amidst the rest of the high school population (think: the lunchroom scene in Mean Girls where Janis calls her lunch table "The Greatest People You Will Ever Meet"). Their conversations and comical retorts kept me cracking up the whole way through (example to get you laughing: "It's not fair. He gets muscles, and I get a little mustache that makes me look like I should be wearing a trench coat and flashing people").ā£

To say that TJ Klune just made me a fan of YA fantasy is an understatement. Not only will I be trying to sneak my way onto the nice list for his next book in this series, but I'll also be giving The Extraordinaries 5 HUGE stars! āļøāļøāļøāļøāļøā£
