Ruth Cooperman retires to Provincetown on Cape Cod and expects to kick off her retirement in perfect relaxation while trying to get to know the locals. All of that changes when she answers the door of her rental home to be met with an abandoned baby, leading Ruth to become acquainted with her new neighbors in ways she never thought possible.
My favorite thing about this book is the fact that Ruth (that was my grandmother's name) heads up to Cape Cod (my grandmother loved Cape Cod) to relax, but her rental home literally turns into a bed and breakfast as more and more people make themselves at home. The Cape Cod descriptions in this book just transplant me to a place and time that feels good. Before my uncle passed away, I spent Memorial Day Weekends with my cousins in Hyannis. The fact that the beach home has a revolving door of people visiting, coming in and out, going for ice cream, heading to a bar, coming back late... it all reminds me of those special times on the Cape.
When I first read the synopsis on Goodreads, I didn't expect as many subplots as there were. This really made me love the book. Not only are you following Ruth's interrupted retirement, but you're also following a storyline in which Ruth seeks to repair the broken relationship with her own daughter and ex-husband. You'll also follow along with the drama of Fern and Elise, the couple who takes the mysterious baby under their care after multiple failed attempts with IVF.
Summer Longing is a perfect blend of both character driven and plot driven as the characters directly impact the directions in which the subplots move. There's romance, friendships, secrets, family drama, and even a little comedic relief.
Am I finally warming up to heartwarming stories? I feel like the Grinch when his heart grew three sizes. 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
