Let me mention one of my favorite things: reading aloud. I KNOW I would be a solid audiobook reader and my students always say that they love when I read aloud. That being said, I only prefer to read aloud when the writing is so beautiful that the words roll off your tongue. Some books are great, but the language just doesn't lend itself to a good read-aloud. Rachel Beanland's writing, however, was so perfectly done that I couldn't avoid reading aloud to myself. Florence Adler Swims Forever reads like a song.
Now here's my review regarding the content. Florence Adler is not a book you'll be able to read quickly. You'll want to take your time and savor every word. It's about family, secrets, tragedy, risk, and, above all, love. At first, the story hooked me because it's based in New Jersey and all Jersey girls love a good Jersey summertime setting (hey, girl), but what made me fall in love were these incredibly dynamic characters. While all the characters are inextricably linked, they each create individual paths. Each character exhibits personal growth, but they also change one another in the process.
And now for my BIG proclamation: Florence Adler Swims Forever made me cry like a baby. Grab yourself a box of tissues and curl up with this stunning, perfectly-executed tale that is both indescribable and yet based on the Rachel Beanland's family (be sure to read the author's note.
