Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks (#53 in 2020)

Greenloop is a community designed to keep its small group of eco-conscious citizens virtually connected to society while still being socially distanced. When Mount Rainier erupts and knocks out their connecting road and internet, the residents of Greenloop realize that they're both physically and virtually separated from the rest of society. The story is told from Kate Holland's journal, a book investigators pulled from the bloody wreckage of the Greenloop community. Kate's journal reveals what happened at Greenloop from the eruption of the volcano through the invasion of a predator that was thought to be a mere myth - Bigfoot.

Remember when I told ya'll that I literally AM the Joaquin Phoenix of bookstagram with how I like to method-read? Well... I took it to a whole new level. Yes, I did read this apocalyptic, nerve-wracking, horrifically detailed book about what happens to a truly socially-distanced society while on quarantine during a pandemic. Why wouldn't I? And did I love it? YES!

Max Brooks has a knack for writing sci-fi and making it both relatable and absolutely terrorizing. It's been a long time since I read a book that truly kept me at the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. It's been a long time since a book actually made my heart race, but Devolution did just that. I loved the honest and brave journal entries of Kate Holland, but I also loved how Brooks included testimonies from investigators. Devolution asks readers to confront the legendary beasts we think to be impossible; it knocks on the door to the scariest part of our subconscious and forces us to consider what we would do to survive.

If you pick this one up, you'll be forced to binge-read it because Max Brooks leaves every single chapter on a cliff hanger... literally every single one. 5 big(footed) stars
