Before Familiar Woods by Ian Pisarcik (#64 in 2020)

Thank you to Crooked Lane Publishing for my advanced copy of this book.

There's a backstory - Ruth's son and Della's son both went missing three years ago. When the bodies were found, Ruth's son was the one they blamed.

There's the present - Ruth has since hidden herself from society and only ventures out when her husband goes missing as well. When Ruth finds that Della's husband is also missing, the two women realize something is amiss.

There's the other plotline - Milk, a war vet, has just come back from Iraq to find that his son, Daniel, has been abandoned by his drug-addicted mother. As Milk tries to learn parenting skills as the responsibility is thrust upon him, he turns to Ruth for support.

Then there's the way that the past, present, and other plot come together - JK I'm not telling you any of that. READ IT FOR YOURSELF!

If I could explain the mental images I had while reading this book, they could only be described as darkly lit scenes with camera shots close up to the actors in a realistic-style that makes you feel like you're there. I'm thinking of a filming style similar to Ozark or Shark Objects or Breaking Bad... And to be honest, if you like any of those shows/series, this book might just be the one for you.

Also HIGH FIVE for short chapters!

Be aware - this is a dark one, but it's a book that'll keep you reading well past your bedtime. 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
