Anxious People by Fredrik Backman (#98 in 2020)
How do I even begin to explain this one?
Main points:
1. A bank is robbed
2. Eight people in a nearby apartment are *accidentally* taken hostage when the robber rushes in
3. The bank robber magically disappears
That's literally all I can say for two reasons:
1. I can't give too much away
2. There's SO MANY directions to go in that I don't know how to begin
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Anxious People is a FULL FIVE STARS and has definitely made its way onto my list of the top books of 2020. It's like The Office meets Schitt's Creek in a hostage situation with a dash of Modern Family-style misunderstandings and some truly wholesome backstories.
Backman's writing is phenomenal both grammatically and stylistically. He takes the concept of a character-driven novel and wraps it around a cleverly constructed plot and then allows the words to carry the rest. I was completely attached to all the various subplots and couldn't help but drop my jaw as the story unraveled to reveal the connections between the characters.
Thank you to @librofm for my advanced listening copy and to #thesixspotlight for letting me join in on this buddy read. It was my first ever Backman book, and it surely won't be my last!
